Malaysian’s “Darling” Pioneer and Downfall in the eyes of Consumers

Introduction

The name Myvi was derived from the word “Malaysian’s vision” and was first introduced by Perodua back in the year 2005. Time sure flies as 14 years has passed since its first generation debuted, and the Mvyi is currently in its third generation. The current third-generation Myvi was first introduced back in Nov 2017 locally made in-house, without rebadging from the current generation Daihatsu Boon. There are some unprecedented strong points about the Myvi, and there are some points that needs major improvement on the next generation Myvi.

The Pioneer Strengths of the Myvi

The Myvi is equipped with Top level safety features such as front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD, reverse parking camera with sensors, front parking sensors, vehicle stability control, hill hold assist, traction control and ISOFIX mounts for child seats.

There are Ingenious local features that aren't gimmicks such as the teh tarik hooks located at the back of the car as well as having an antisnatch theft hook that supports a max load of up to 3kg which is convenient for ladies to place their handbag in the car without having to worry that their handbag would get snatch along the way.

One would say that the Myvi is hatchback that is value for money, it offers a list of safety features as well as bells and whistles for a car that is price below RM100k. One of the most notifiable features is the Advance Safety Assist (ASA), it is a safety feature that is available in the all new Myvi 1.5 Advance to reduce possible frontal collision at low speed due to negligence when driving.

This feature is only available in premium cars such as the Hyundai Ioniq or the Volvo XC90. The Myvi triumphs above its competition

As it is the only that is below RM 100k that comes with this feature in the market at the moment.

The Major Downfalls of the Myvi

The 4 speed Automatic Transmission does a basic level job, and fails to give you the wow factor when driving. We would love to see the next generation Myvi featuring a CVT transmission as it helps the car run at the most efficient revolutions per minute for a range of different vehicle speeds. Because of this, CVT transmissions are perfect for when you are trying to ensure maximum fuel efficiency

It would be great to see a major revamp in the infotainment system found in the Myvi. This is mainly because the infotainment system is really bad for a car of its price point, it is a total letdown that the GPS isn’t compatible with either Android or Apple Car Play which is a major inconvenience. In addition, to make things worst when you have the GPS running, you can't have music on at the same time which is a first for a car that is produced in the 21st century.

Would the Myvi be able to handle Malaysian roads and perform economically at the same time ?

Eventhough the new dual VVT-i NR-series toyota engines are powerful enough in this relative lightweight, but the low end response could be better. The Fuel efficiency is 15% better as compared to the previous generation Myvi 1.5L. This was proven when we put the car to the test by driving both cars side by side from KL to Penang. In addition Four-speed auto is merely functional - it isn't the fastest and smoothest shifting, or the most calm at a cruise.

Would maneuvers through tight corners be a breeze for the Myvi ?

There is no doubt that the all new Myvi has a much refined drive than before. This could be seen when maneuvering the car, the driver would be able to feel a quicker steering and improvements in body control and stability.

The overall ride feels floaty and jittery especially on poorly maintained and uneven roads, to make things worst the suspension is quite wobbly as when driving across at Pothole at normal speeds, the rear passengers will feel some bounciness on rough roads which is not suitable for long journeys on Malaysian roads.
Would the Myvi fare well in protecting its passengers on the Hazadrous roads of Malaysia?

Where safety its concern the all new Myvi score Five stars in the latest ASEAN NCAP crash test. The all new Myvi Advance comes equipped with six airbags (four in the 1.3L) and VSC, the most noticeable feature of the Myvi 1.5 would be the Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) pack that includes Pre-Collision Warning, Pre-Collision Braking (low-speed autonomous emergency braking), Front Departure Alert and Pedal Misoperation Control for the 1.5 Advance. This is a top notch safety features that was previously only available in car that is prices above RM 100k such as the Hyundai Ioniq in Malaysia.
Would the passengers be able to sit in the Myvi comfortably without a tight squeeze ?

It is quite a relief to know that the Myvi's signature high-roofed body is gone, replaced by a footprint that's significantly larger. Although the Myvi will no longer accommodate your top hat, headroom is still more than adequate for the average size Malaysian. There's also a full-sized spare tyre with matching rim and two-step reclining rear seats.
Is the Myvi really all that worth it ?

For the base variant 1.3 Myvi, it comes equipped with 4 SRS Airbags and LED Headlamps as standard. This feature alone is sufficient to knock out its rival such as the Iriz, i10 or even Picanto in the market.

In addition, the premium 1.5 Advance comes equipped with safety features such as Advance Safety Assist (ASA) which adds neligence drivers on the road to ensure their safety. The Myvi is the only car in the market currently that is priced below RM100k that comes equipped with the Advance Safety Assist (ASA) feature for its premium model.

Before the introduction of the all new Myvi, potential buyers could only find such features in premium cars such as the Hyundai Ioniq which retails above RM 100k, which is almost double of the price of the premium 1.5 variant of the Myvi sold in Malaysia.

Overall I would say that the Myvi is a car that is value for money, and if your the type of buyer that is on a shoe string budget and would like to opt for a hatchbacks that comes along with the bells and whistles, then the Myvi would the car for you. Otherwise it would be wise to consider other alternatives in the market instead.

For Potential Buyers that are considering the Myvi 1.5 Advance, listed below are the latest price list from Perodua.
