Introduction

The Suprima S is derived from the English word Supreme according to Proton.

This C-segment car was launched in the year 2013 in Malaysia with a design to attract customers. The Suprima S is a 5-seater hatchback and is available in 4 trims namely - Standard, Executive, Premium and Super Premium.

In addition, the Suprima S has been moved upmarket and is aimed at the mid-sized hatchbacks such as the likes of the Volkswagen Golf Ford Focus, as well as Peugeout 308 in the market.

The main changes found in the interior of the Suprima would be the new trim panels and on-dash multimedia system.

The infotainment system features a 7 inch display from designed by German car audio specialist Blaupunkt, and has a various features such as GPS satellite navigation, audio and video playback (USB, SD card or Aux input), plus Wi-Fi (a YES 4G dongle comes with the car) and Bluetooth connectivity.

However it was a letdown as the screen’s display quality is poor as compared to other touchscreen displays that are offered by other car manufacturers such as the Honda City or Toyota Vios in the market. This is because even at its maximum brightness, most people would struggle to look at the screen as it is quite dim when driving under the sunlight.
The 7 inch display featured in the Suprima isn’t user-friendly system either, as it requires a lot of patience and time to master all the available features in the display unit

Exterior of the Suprima S

Proton's signature wing shaped front grille is evident in the Suprima S with Proton insignia placed in the middle of it. This hatchback looks very sharp and aggressive owing to its edgy design.

The Standard and Executive trims employ 16-inch alloy wheels with tires measuring at 205/55 R16 whereas the Premium trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels and 215/45 R17 sized tires for a balanced drive. The spoiler employed at the rear of this hatchback reduces drag and allows it to be fuel efficient. Some of the features may vary in different trims.

Performance & Fuel Consumption of the Suprima S

Proton Suprima S is equipped with a Campro 1.6-litre Turbo charged engine which produces 140 hp at 5000 rpm and a peak torque measuring 205 Nm between the range of 2000 to 4000 rpm.

This is an incredible feat for Proton as the engine is equally as powerful as the Honda Civic 1.8 which is produces 141hp at 6500 rpm.

The suprima has a acceleration time just 9.9 seconds from 0-100km/h, however top speed is limited to 190 km/h.

In terms of fuel consumption, the Suprima averages around 9.1 litre/100km which is quite economical despite it being a turbo charged engine.

Safety of the Suprima S
Suprima S is equipped with six aribags as standard. This includes Dual front airbags, side airbags and curtain airbags.

The Suprima has safety features which includes - Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Brake Assist, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Traction Control stabilize this vehicle on slippery surfaces and on emergency braking.

It’s claimed to qualifiy for a top-notch five-star ANCAP crash safety rating, which is much better than the Honda Accord or the Toyota Camry in the market.

Summary
The Suprima S is car that is value for money as it offers top notch performance and precision handling for a car of its segment.

However the build quality of the car it quite poor as compared to its rivals such as the Jazz, City or even the Viso in the market. Putting that aside, the Suprima would most likely be able to appeal to potential Japanese and Korean car buyers and convince them to change to the local offering instead.
If you’re a potential car buyer that is more focused on the performance and handling of the car, then the Suprima S is the car for you. However if your looking for more refinement and a better build quality car ,it would be better to opt for other alternatives instead.
