Introduction

Proton Iriz can be considered a gamechanging hatchback Malaysian automaker Proton and was launched in the year 2014. In Malaysia, this decently priced hatchback is available in 3 trims with Standard, Executive and Premium labels. These trims are different from each other in terms of features and engine capacity. Iriz was launched at a global level with its 1.3-litre VVT and 1.6-litre VVT engines (with further subdivisions in terms of transmission) which were designed in accordance to the need of global market.

While the exterior looks youthful and cutesy, the interior of the same car is much more mature. The overall layout of the cabin has been given a black theme to accentuate its sporty essence.

The three-spoke steering wheel has a very simple design but feels good to hold and comes integrated with buttons for audio and Bluetooth telephony.

The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system takes the centre stage and comes embedded with compatibilities for Bluetooth, reverse camera, navigation, and smartphone connectivity.


In addition, the presence of 60:40 split rear seats and a plethora of cup holders and small storage compartments in the cabin make it a practical option.

Talking about the exterior of Proton Iriz, it has a Reinforced Safety Structure (RESS) which is five times stronger than the normal galvanized steel at critical areas for the safety of its occupants. Its base 1.3 variant comes with 14 inch alloy wheels and 175/65 R14 tyres. Whereas the 1.6-litre engine variants have 15-inch alloy wheels with 195/55 R15 tires to complete the sporty exterior of Iriz.

The front of this hatch showoffs black bold grille along with chrome plated Proton insignia in the middle of upper front grille. The crisp body-lines and bold fenders add more to its sporty and young look. You couldn't really expect more risking little from your pocket.

The Iriz comes with Hot Press Forming (HPF) technology for vital components of the body-in-white. This technology is more commonly used on European vehicles, HPF parts have three times the strength of mild steel, and was first introduced in the Preve and Suprima S. This helps safety, verified by the award of full five stars in the ASEAN NCAP crash test.


Performance of the Iriz


A 1.3 litre kicks things off at 94 hp at 5,750 rpm and 120 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, while the 1.6 litre develops 107 hp at 5,750 rpm (peak arriving 250 rpm earlier compared to the 1.6 litre IAFM+ engine) and 150 Nm at 4,000 rpm.

Both have variable valve timing, but they’re not just Campros with VVT bolted on. With a new block, pistons and valves, this is the first of a new series of engines that will power future models and finally usher off the Campro into retirement.
Driveability of the Iriz


The base 1.3 manual had a loose gear shifter which was super notchy to slot into gear at the same time, quite ironic in some ways. It was also rough around the edges in terms of engine noise and vibration came from it.

The 1.6 Premium CVT however, it was the darn CVT gearbox that liked to hold high revs which caused the car to be noisy and vibrate its way to whatever speed you were accelerating too. This is quite a major inconvenience especially when your driving and would like to enjoy great music on the go.


Summary

For an entry-level hatch, the Proton Iriz impresses you with its cutesy road presence and smart interiors which make it feel a cut premium over its competitors.

The Iriz is a practical that is suitable for daily usage.However it is important to note that the rear seats isn’t as rommy as compared to the Perodua Myvi or even the Honda Jazz due to its smaller body.

But then, these are not such big concerns to dent the overall package of this lively and practical city car as the Iriz is car that represents great value for money.
