Mazda 2 Sedan Front
Mazda 2 Sedan Rear
Introduction
Mazda vehicles have a relatively larger generation cycle change. The first Mazda 2 for example, was launched in 2002. It joins the rank of B-segment vehicles which have hatchbacks at the core and sedan body styles built around them. The Mazda 2 has now been refreshed and we take it out for a spin.
Interior of the Mazda 2 Sedan
The cabin of the new age Mazdas is way better than before. The Mazda 2 sedan subscribes to this thought as well.
The Infotainment on the mid-spec Mazda 2 is reduced to a simplified CD audio player unit, which features four speakers instead of six and a downsized dot matrix display in place of the LCD unit on the full-spec car. The display choice means that there’s no reverse camera here, but reverse parking sensors remain.

The MZD touchscreen infotainment system is very good with respect to the touch functionality. However, it lacks the Apple Carplay and Android Auto function which most car makers have in the market which is a big disappointment for an establish brand like Mazda.
For passengers that are above 6ft in height would experience a tight cramp as there would not be sufficient headroom for them. However most consumers don’t have to worry about this issue in Malaysia as the average height for males in Malaysia would be 5 feet 5 and the average height for females would 5 feet.
The bottle holders are a convenient feature to have especially for the front passengers however as the are no rear bottles holders present, the rear passengers would have to share a single bottle holder placed behind the handbrake unit.
Boot Space of the Mazda 2 Sedan
The boot space of the Mazda 2 Sedan is relatively small at 350 litres, this would be a massive inconvienced for the potential car buyers who wish to store more luggage on long road trips.
Exterior of the Mazda 2 Sedan
It looks exactly like the hatchback, except if you look from the side or from the rear. The sedan is roughly 260 mm more than the hatchback in terms of length. Speaking of which, the dimensions are 4,320 mm in length, 1,695 mm width and 1,495 mm height. The weight difference between the two is a mere 10 kg. This explains why Mazda says that the performance is vastly the same between the two. Ground clearance of the sedan though is 3 mm lower than that of the hatchback. We love the smooth flowing lines and the sedan doesn’t look like a boot slapped on version of the hatchback. Instead, it carves its own identity.
Out goes the machined/two-tone 16-inch alloys, and 15-inch units – wrapped with 185/65 series tyres – take their place. In front, the foglamp housings are similar to the ones found with the recent update, but are in matte black compared to the gloss black on the fully-specfied variants.

Mazda 2 Driveability
Mazda offers the 2 sedan with the same hardware as the hatch. This means MacPherson struts in the front and a torsion beam at the back. These have been tuned for better handling as is the case with most Mazdas. The handling is very good and you can easily turn the 2 sedan at a higher speed than you usually will in any other comparable car.
The GVC system comes as standard and maintains body control irrespective of the speeds one is carrying around a corner. Ride quality feels a tad stiff, however, as we all know, it is the driver who has the most fun in a Mazda.
The steering wheel is electrically assisted but then it has a wholesome connect with the roads and informs the driver accordingly as well. All wheel disc brakes stop the car in safe distances within no time. There is less brake fade as well.
Summary
The Mazda 2 sedan is a fun car to drive with precision handling. It is priced between RM 75,866 for the Mid spec to RM 92,886 for the premium spec 1.5 LED. If you want Mazda’s special Soul Red colour, then you pay RM 500 extra. If your the type of car buyer that is more concern of the engineering and handling of the car other than the bells and whistles that comes with it, then the Mazda 2 Sedan would be the car for you.
